MUFC Continues to Excel in Player Development

The Vancouver Whitecaps and BC Soccer have announced the inaugural roster for Western Canada’s first Regional EXCEL Centre (REX). Of the 22 players selected, eight are former MUFC players - Emma Hooton (2001), Camila Gomez-Hernandez (2000), Julia Grosso (2000), Emma Regan (2000), Sophie Damian (2000), Faith O’Neill (1999), Simmrin Dhaliwal (1997) and Rachel Jones (1997). In addition, Emma Humphries who most recently coached the MUFC 1998 and 2001 Girls teams, has been named as Girls Elite REX and Academy Assistant Coach.

When asked to comment, MUFC’s Technical Director, Frank Ciaccia was naturally delighted at the announcements, “Since inception, this Club has maintained an unwavering commitment to player development and advancement. This philosophy is the core of our operations and our coaches respect it. The BC Soccer 2-Year Review of the BCSPL revealed MUFC was leading the way in the advancement of players at 30%. To now have this additional group into REX along with Emma, truly validates our efforts and we couldn’t be more proud. I will add this also reflects the fine work our grassroots partner Clubs are doing with these young players. Their programs are doing well in readying these players for the BCSPL standard. Congratulations to all of the girls selected to the REX”.

MUFC Class of ’96 - Girls

Mountain United FC is proud to celebrate a unique and diverse group of current and former 1996-born players who have now committed to post secondary opportunities. With the launch of the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League in the Fall of 2011, a dedicated and talented group of girls came together under then coach, Jesse Symons and later Lee Tregonning. This team went on to great success capturing Division titles, a number of tournaments, the BCSPL League Cup and Provincial Premier Cup in 2012 along with representing the Club and Province at the CSA Club Nationals. Following this terrific run, quite extraordinarily, 10 players from the team were selected and promoted into the Whitecaps Girls U18 Elite Program. While this essentially meant the dissolution of the MUFC team, the Club was delighted with the progression of so many players. The entire group may have moved on to other programs but we appreciate and respect their association to MUFC. We congratulate them all on achieving post secondary commitments to further their education and to continue playing soccer. We also proudly recognize three current 1996-born girls playing with our U18 team which is largely made up of 1997-born players. Well done to all of these players and MUFC wishes you the very best as you move into a new phase as University athletes.
